Non specific low back pain (includes ligaments strain, joint dysfunction, disc protrusion/prolapse, with or without nerve root compression).

  • Facet joint pain.
  • Sacroiliac dysfunction.
  • Degenerative disc/joint disease (Spondylosis).
  • Osteoporosis.

Less Common Conditions, any of which may lead to severe pain or disability.

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Osteo-chondritis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Discogenic pain

Spinal problems can take many years to develop, some common causes are:

  • Poor work place design and inadequate/infrequent training for both manual and sedentary workers
  • Extended periods working in fixed positions. Highest incidence in all sedentary or all manual work
  • Lowest incidence is found when tasks and activities are varied
  • Poor car seating and poor driving posture. Professional drivers are more likely to suffer
  • Lack of exercise
  • Sagging mattresses, poorly supportive sofas and armchairs
  • Bad lifting and carrying method

Common Effects

  • Loss of ability to walk, sit, bend or lift.
  • Incontinence and intractable pain.
  • Depression, sciatic pain, loss of sensation and numbness in limbs and feet.
